Safe For Online Dating

We disagree with your startling editorial "State Need Not Be Online Chaperon" (Our Opinion, April 12) and believe that Florida's safer online dating legislation is a positive step toward a safer environment for online dating consumers.

We believe it is appropriate and imperative for online-dating consumers to receive safety information from their service providers and that these providers disclose the extent of protective safety screening offered to consumers. This common-sense and easy-to-implement idea will result in greater protection for online daters and their young children, if any, from sexual predators.

Some argue that competition and the marketplace should dictate disclosure; however, in this case it means consumers are denied access to vital information they need to make informed decisions.

It is a basic tenet of government to protect the safety of its citizens, and many online daters are unaware of the lack of screening by some online dating companies. This legislation is necessary to promote company disclosure to consumers exactly what they are getting with their membership. Disclosure is a common practice utilized in a variety of industries; online dating should be no different.
