Spotlight on Texas

Efforts in the most recent 79th Texas Legislative Session were to make online dating safer by requiring providers of online dating services to provide full disclosure to their users as to whether or not felony criminal background screenings were being run on their communicating members. Specifically, if service providers do not conduct criminal background screenings, they would be required to notify users this safeguard is not provided. Whereas no company would be forced to conduct criminal background screenings, legislation would merely require the disclosure of important safety information.

Because of the unwavering support of Safer Online Dating Alliance coalition members in Texas, SODA efforts experienced tremendous results. Notably, the legislature granted a study of online dating and the use of the Internet by convicted felons who prey on consumers of Texas. The Safer Online Dating Alliance will be recommending a team of experienced professionals most capable to address concerns involved in safer online dating.
