Spotlight on California

Efforts in the most recent California Legislative Session were to make online dating safer by requiring providers of online dating services to provide full disclosure to their users as to whether or not felony criminal background screenings were being run on their communicating members. Specifically, if service providers do not conduct criminal background screenings, they would be required to notify users this safeguard is not provided. Whereas no company would be forced to conduct criminal background screenings, legislation would merely require the disclosure of important safety information.

The California legislature continues to consider legislation with respect to safer online dating. Notably, the legislature granted a study of online dating and the use of the Internet by convicted felons who prey on consumers of California.
